RECOLLECTIONS OF SHEILA FAIRBAIRN (DAUGHTER), BASED ON WHAT HER MOTHER (ANNABELLA) HAD TOLD HER

Hugh and Annabella originally met during the years of the first world war at the Fife Mining Institute in Cowdenbeath. Annabella was trained in engineering (for shell manufacture) and worked in Coventry for part of the war. Hugh was seriously wounded in the war and he was possibly at the Institute being re-trained. This first encounter did not go well. The young male students frequently played tricks on the girls. Hugh played a trick on Annabella, which she did not find amusing and refused to speak to him thereafter.

A few years later Annabella was working as a nanny for a Sheila Scobie on Park Avenue, Dunfermline. One day, she was posting a letter at the end of the street and Hugh was passing. He asked if she was the young Irish(!) girl, she said "yes", and he asked her out on a date to the pictures. Annabella wasn't keen, but Mrs Scobie persuaded her it might be fun. She had arranged to meet Hugh at the end of the street. However, when she got there she couldn't remember what he looked like and there were two men in the vicinity. Fortunately, Hugh looked up before what might have been an embarrassing exchange.

However, all was not plain sailing. The two had a slightly stormy relationship at times. After one night out Hugh returned home tight-lipped and his sisters assumed the courting was no more. However, one evening Hugh climbed the gate at Park Avenue and knocked at the back door. Annabella answered it and asked "What are you doing here?". He answered (factually), "I climbed over the gate". And, history demonstrates, that was deemed sufficient by Annabella! ¹²
