RECOLLECTIONS FROM SHEILA FAIRBAIRN (SISTER) OF WHAT HER MOTHER (ANNABELLA) TOLD HER

The attic flat they rented at Hospital Hill was owned by a female relation on the Bathgate side. She was keen for the baby boy to be named William, but Annabella refused because she didn't like it. This was despite the relation offering some sort of nestegg for the baby. However, dad must have felt that the money would be useful so he did register the baby as William. When Annabella found this out on her husband's resturn from the registry office she sent him straight back to change it.

Note by Martin Fairbairn (nephew): While there might be some general truth in this story, I'm a little surprised at the father being allowed to change the register entry. ¹
