Obituary
Mr. Jas. Fairbairn
The death has taken place at the Cove, Cockburnspath, of Mr. James Fairbairn. Mr. Fairbairn was a well-known local fisherman and was a member of the crew of one of the two remaining fishing boats at the Cove.
His father was one of the village's ten survivors in the 1881 disaster. His grandfather was the last of the Cove smugglers who got their contraband from French vessels and made a profitable trade in spirits and tobacco.
During the First World War he was on minesweeper service, and during the last was a Coastguard. His wife predeceased him. Two sons are in Canada and a daughter in Australia.

Obituary
A gloom was cast over the fishing village of Cove, on Thursday, when it became known that Mr. James ("Jervie") Fairbairn had died suddenly. The eldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Fairbairn, Cove, he had not been in the best of health for some time, and suffered a fatal collapse while performing a small task at his home. Born and bred in the village, he became a fisherman on leaving school and apart from naval duty in the 1914-1918 war resided there all his life. A typical East Coast inshore fisherman, he was expert at his calling and retired from his arduous duties only some few years ago. Particularly fond of young people, he taught many the art of sailing small boats and of catching shell and other fish. An expert maker of lobster and crab "creels" he also made cane and willow baskets for fishing and farming purposes. In his younger days he was a keen athelete and, not so many years ago, took part in his favourite race at the local sports. During the last war he was an auxillary coastguard and served at the watch-house at Siccar Point. Of a cheerful disposition, he will be especially remembered by the many holidaymakers who visited Cove and found in him a most helpful friend and guide. Like his father before him, he was a real character, one of a type which is disappearing rapidly from the small fishing villages that seemed to breed them in the past. He was held in much repect by all who knew him and his familiar figure will be greatly missed. Mr. Fairbairn's wife died some years ago, and he is survived by four sons and two daughters. The funeral, with British Legion honours, took place to Cockburnspath Churchyard, on Monday, and was attended by a large concourse of relatives and friends. The services at the house and the graveside were conducted by the Rev. Robert Keltie.
